Great War Theatre

Researcher's Summary:

The play was toured by Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Vaughan's companies - one company initially but by two companies under their management (designated the 'North' and 'South' companies) between October 1915 and April 1916. The Stage, 5 August 1915 and 20 January 1916, noted that the play took its title from that of a popular song which was written in 1911 by Hermann Frederic Löhr and D. Eardley-Wilmot with the following lyrics: '‘When the golden sun sinks in the hills / And the toil of a long day is o’er, / Though the road may be long, in the lilt of a song, / I forget I was weary before. / Far ahead, where the blue shadows fall, / I shall come to contentment and rest, / And the toils of the day will be all charmed away / In my little grey home of the west. / There are hands that will welcome me in, / There are lips I am burning to kiss. / There are two eyes that shine just because they are mine / And a thousand things other men miss. / It’s a corner of heaven itself / Though it’s only a tumble-down nest, / But with love brooding there, why no place can compare / With my little grey home in the west’. N.B. Performances after the first week of 1917 have not been researched.

Reviewed at length, with details of the plot, in The Era, 4 August 1915, and The Stage, 5 August 1915. The Stage, 5 August 1915: ‘Mrs. F. G. Kimberley’s new domestic drama was produced on Monday before crowded and highly appreciative audiences in the author’s own theatre, and in her native town. As a playwright Mrs Kimberley has attained her majority, for this is her twenty-first production. Mrs Kimberley is prolific without being prolix. Her latest drama shows fresh strength, and has more variety. Into the drawing of the characters a great deal of thought has been put, for they are more definite and individual than one sometimes meets ... In the construction of the play Mrs Kimberley has exercised considerable ingenuity... [The play is] agreeable, exciting, and not too obvious. That there should be a great deal of sentiment may be taken for granted when one considers that the play is based upon the popular song’. The cast was: Cecil Standing, Melville Chiswell; Robert Standing, Frank Eaglesfield; Dick Bryant, Ernest Vaughan; Jack Hartley, Edgar Morgan; Coloured Sam, Frank Mackinnon; Tom Slopper, Jack Hayes; P.C. Christopher, Geo. Rodney; Duggie, Little Willie Graham; Mary Bryant, Pauline Nanton; Mrs. H. Standing, Ada Roscoe; Mrs. Bryant, Ellen Bevereley; Peggy Bryant, Madge Douglas.

‘Theatre Royal. Patrons of this house gave a good reception to “The Little Grey Home in the West,” a new domestic play, by Mrs. F. G. Kimberley, which has been on the stage only three weeks. Its scenes carry us from the English country-side to the Wild West, and there are several thrilling situations’ (Sheffield Daily Telegraph, 24 August 1915). ‘Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Vaughan’s company provide the entertainment here with the thoroughly up-to-date play The Little Grey Home in the West. Miss Madge Douglas as Peggy and Mr. Ernest Vaughan as Dick Bryant are the capable principals in a well-balanced company’ (The Stage, 26 August 1915).

Read Narrative
‘Mrs. F. G. Kimberley’s latest domestic drama, The Little Grey Home in the West, is being played by Mr Ernest Vaughan’s company, and its popularity is amply proved by the good houses and the high appreciation of the audiences. The interest throughout is well sustained, and the interpretation of the agreeable, exciting, and not too obvious situations leaves nothing to be desired. Mr. Edward E. Ashby is well placed as Cecil Standing, a character he carries through with sincerity and ability. Mr. Ernest Vaughan acts the part of Dick Bryant with a forcefulness which is convincing. The lustful and avaricious Robert Standing is played with success by Mr. Frank Eaglesfield, who always makes his lines effective. The sympathy of the audience is awakened by the capital acting of Miss Pauline Nanton as the badly treated Mary Bryant. Peggy Bryant is played with intelligence and power by Miss Madge Douglas, the loyal feeling for her sister being sweetly and feelingly expressed. The ambitions of Mrs. Standing are excellently portrayed by Miss Ada Roscoe in a charming and dignified manner. Miss Ellen Beverley assists in the success of the play by her picture of Mrs. Bryant. The play is well staged and dressed’. The Stage, 2 September 1915.

The Era, 9 and 16 February 1916, listed The Little Grey Home In The West (South) as On The Road from 14 February at the H., Preston. Also The Stage, 10 February 1916. Also: ‘The play has enjoyed remarkable success, and the reason is quite clear. It is the work of a practised hand who has weaved together a story of strong human interest, expressing a wide range of emotion. It is presented in ten scenes, and like most of Mr. Kimberley’s work it is built on a sound foundation. The main idea from which the action springs is the love which two mothers – one poor and the other rich, but both in their different ways selfish and exacting - show for their sons. When sentiment and ambition come into collision the dramatic sparks begin to fly if manipulated by such a capable craftsman as Mrs. Kimberley. The incidents are well contrived to ensure a rousing finish, and most acceptable is the flavour of light comedy. The acting throughout is admirable’. Lancashire Evening Post, 15 February 1916.

An able hero is Phil Harper, who acts with a manliness quite convincing. Madge Douglas is well in the picture as the heroine, and Ada Roscoe’s assumption of the adventuress is most capable. A dramatic portrayal of the erring son is given by Ernest Vaughan. Frank Eaglesfield does the best he can with the part of Standing. Also: ‘Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Vaughan’s company will be seen on Monday next at the Theatre Royal, Jarrow, in “The Little Grey Home in the West,” by Mrs. F. G. Kimberley. This is Mrs. F. G. Kimberley’s twenty-first play, and instead of writing herself out as many playwrights do, to judge by the great success this piece has achieved, she has written herself in. The story is a simple one of true domestic life, showing the humble home and the rich one, where mother love is just as strong in each. Two mothers and two sisters fight for their sons’ and brothers’ happiness, women as usual sacrificing all for their men folk. There is plenty of good clean comedy and brightness. The company is a strong one, headed by Miss Madge Douglas as “Peggy Bryant,” and Mr. Ernest Vaughan “Wick [sic – Dick] Bryant”’. Jarrow Express, 24 March 1916.
