‘Unlike most villains in plays, Phil Murket did not go to gaol when his misdeeds were exposed. The policeman asked him, “Are you working on munitions? Are you exempt?” The reply was in the negative, and the inspector said, “Then come with me to the recruiting office,” and so the curtain was rung down on “The Slacker” at the Grand Theatre last night. It is a charming little domestic play, with an interesting and wholesome and enjoyable comedy. All the characters are well sustained. E. Warden’s acting in the title role being exceptionally good. Mr. Fred Lloyd handled the character of the manly parson extremely well, and Mr. Dennis Leslie found favour as Ned Marsden. Miss Lily Harrold and Miss Constance Carew aroused much sympathy by their capable interpretations of the characters of Nell and Eva’. Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail, 5 December 1916.

Read Narrative
‘“Blackmail” is the title the play which is being submitted at the Grand Theatre this week by Mr. Will H. Glaze’s Co. Brother and sister set out a heartless scheme of blackmail against Sir Chas. Inglemere, a Cabinet Minister, and in the weaving of the plot there is much that is pathetic. The schemers meet with their just deserts [sic]. The company is well-balanced in every respect, and amongst those worthy of mention are Mr. Harry Tresham, as Sir Chas. Inglemere, Mr. Will Scotton, as the son, Mr. Chas. Yorke, as secretary to Sir Charles, Mr. R. Wilson, as an American journalist of the hustling type, Miss Renee Bevan as Miss Gwendolen Dawn, and Miss Nita Langford as Lady Marion Inglemere’. The Hartlepool Daily Mail, 19 March 1918, advertised Will H. Glaze’s company in the new play A Son of the Sea by Clifford Rean at the Grand. ‘“A Son of the Sea” is the title of a play which is occupying the boards at the Grand Theatre this week. It is interesting and at times exciting, as, for instance, in the storm scene, where a thrilling rescue is effected. The story is sufficiently absorbing to demand the closest attention of the audience throughout. There is pathos, humour, and a strong element' (Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail, 19 March 1918).
15 Jul 1918 The Black Sheep Of The Family Professional
Read Narrative
‘“The Black Sheep of the Family,” a drama presented at the Grand Theatre last night, proved most acceptable to two large audiences. The plot is excellently thought out and the cast good. Admirable scenic effects combine with good acting and lively comedy to ensure success. In the role of the hero, Mr. Arthur Hinton is particularly fine and he is ably supported by Miss Peggy Courtenay. In the heavy work Mr. R. Powell James and Miss Alice Greenwood prove themselves accomplished artistes. Others responsible for clever work are the Misses Laura Wright and Madge Turner, and Messrs Leslie Steward, Arthur Trail, and H. C. Ward’. Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail, 16 July 1918.
22 Jul 1918 The Unmarried Mother Professional

‘Exceptionally large audiences visited the Grand Theatre last night to witness a drama, entitled “The Unmarried Mother.” The work proved a most interesting one. In the title role Miss Dora Weber, by her fine acting, enlisted the sympathies of all. As the lover, Mr. Alfred D. Adams also treated his audience to some clever acting, whilst. to Mr. Frank V. Fenn must be accorded the highest praise for his exposition of the role of Lieut. Allen. Mr. H. A. Langlois does the heavy work well, and Miss Florrie MacInnes is an accomplished actress. Other characters are in good hands, and capital humour is introduced by Miss Amy Wood and Mr. Allan Carruthers’. Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail, 23 July 1918.
