Eva Elwes
Eva Elwes was an English actress and playwright. She wrote over 50 plays between 1907 and 1938 and was particularly prolific during the First World War. She lived in Walsall from c.1911 to 1921 and moved to South Shields when she married Ernest Eykyn (her second husband, having been widowed before 1911) in 1925. From 1896 through until the late 1920s Elwes performed in plays and variety shows. She regularly performed in her own plays which were often staged by Will H. Glaze’s touring theatre company. In 1921 when Glaze became the lessee of the Alexandra Theatre in Wallis Street, South Shields, Elwes performed in the Alexandra Players and then became co-lessee with Ethel Hird from 1930-1940.
