Great War Theatre

Examiner of Plays' Summary:

This is a spirited and unusually well-written melodrama of the spy order. The main story is as follows. Captain Terrence Fielding comes on leave to a village on the coast. He is in love with and at once becomes engaged to Lady Mary, the principal lady of the place and the heroine of the play. There are also resident there two supposed Belgian refugees, a man and a woman, and he recognises them as Germans whom he saw while a prisoner in Germany, when the man brutally assaulted a dying English Officer. He knows their real names and tells his friend Colonel Sharrow, of the Secret Service. It is clear that they are there to get hold of him, Fielding, because he knows the secret of a new machine gun, and get him to Germany in a submarine lying off the coast. In order to arrest the whole gang and down the submarine, Fielding pretends to be in love with the German woman and also drunk - thus alienating Lady Mary - and is taken to their house when there is a struggle and they are arrested. But how to deal with the submarine? Well, it appears that the signal for her rising was to be given by the German woman swimming out and cutting a wire attached to a buoy: this Mary volunteers to do in (of course) the great scene of the play. The love trouble is of course satisfactorily arranged, the Vicar pleading successfully with the man Lady Mary engaged herself to in pique at Fielding's supposed unfaithfulness. In the last part of Act I there is a scene of the unveiling of a war shrine, the Vicar appearing in a surplice etc (p.43), with choristers singing. It is quite reverently meant and I do not think can be objected to, though it might offend some people's tastes. It is outside the church. Part of the lighter side of the play is afforded by two soldiers, one the son of the Vicar's cook who has gained a commission in the field, the other a courtesy lord who is a private. This might annoy the feelings of officers of the old army, but is quite typical - given a little stage exaggeration - of the new army – I know of a cook’s son officer myself – and I think the phase cannot be excluded from the theatre. Both men – and this is important – are made thoroughly good fellows, and I think the business is rather a good lesson in practical democracy. In act III pp. 12 etc. I do not like the treatment of the German spies as a matter of taste, but I do not advise interference, except perhaps with the statement that the woman spy was the Crown Prince’s mistress p. 13. That is unfair, though any protection of that personage would be very unpopular. Recommended for Licence. G. B. Street
