Great War Theatre

Wilson Howard was the stage name of William James Sullivan. He was born on 30 July 1872 according to the 1939 Register below. The Stage, 26 December 1895 carried a formal notice of the marriage of Wilson Howard and Carlotta Anson at Scarborough on Thursday 19 December 1895 (as well as an erroneous news report of the marriage of Carlotta Anson and ‘Wilfred Howard’, which was the name of an actor and baritone singer). Personal advertisements describing Carlotta Anson as Mrs Wilson Howard appeared in The Stage from 25 March 1897. A public family tree on Ancestry.co.uk states that Carlotta was born Carlotta Ascher Zalmanson on 25 December 1866 in London. An advertisement ‘Wilson Howard. Disengaged. 44 Everton Valley, Liverpool’ appeared in The Stage, 6 October 1932. An advertisement ‘Wilson Howard. Manage and/or Produce. Parts. 44, Everton Valley, Liverpool’ appeared under the heading ‘Managers & Agents’ in The Stage, 26 January 1933. At some stage Wilson Howard and Carlotta separated. The 1939 Register shows Carlotta Howard, born 25 December 1872 (right day and month but wrong year?), married but no husband is shown, a dramatic actress, living at 97 Tachbrook Street, Westminster, London. According to the National Probate Register, Carlotta Sullivan of 1488 Greenford Road, Greenford, Middlesex, wife of Wilson Sullivan (combining her husband’s stage first name and his birth surname), died on 22 February 1956. The GRO death index gives her age as 89. The 1939 Register shows Wilson Howard, born 30 July 1872, married but no wife is shown, a theatrical manager & actor, still living at 44 Everton Valley, Liverpool. The death of Wilson Howard aged 84 was registered at Liverpool North in July-September 1956. His age at death fits with his age on the 1901 census return and his date of birth on the 1939 Register. [The above information is from sources available on Ancestry.co.uk. Three public family trees on Ancestry.co.uk record - but surely erroneously given the details above - that Carlotta’s husband James Sullivan was born in Ireland on 14 May 1868 and died in Illinois, USA on 23 August 1962.]
