Great War Theatre

Examiner of Plays' Summary:

A very crude and illiterate domestic drama written round the subject indicated by the title. The unhappy heroine in a servant whose officer-lover is ordered to the front when he is about to fulfill his promise of marriage. The girl's harsh mistress - who eventually turns out to be her unknown and penitent mother! - orders her out of the house, while her nephew, the villain of the piece, who helps to hound her down when her 'war baby' is born, not only makes base proposals to her but steals her lover's air-craft invention for sale to the Germans. The ridiculous melodrama is padded out with the farcical courtship of a cook - who has all the threads of the foolish plot in her hands - by a comic policeman, who, when told to arrest the heroine for a theft committed to save her child from starvation, refuses to do his duty on the grounds that beneath his uniform he has a heart and not a stone. The whole thing, which, of course, winds up with a happy marriage and forgiveness all round - although almost incredibly absurd in its forced sentimentality, is quite innocuous, and it is. "The War Baby' is a theme that has been universally discussed in recent months, and it is not surprising that it should find its way into stage drama. The problem has been dealt with in a very interesting way ...and two enthusiastic houses witnessed its performance.' (Shields Daily News, 13 July 1915).
