Great War Theatre

Georgina Whitlock was born Georgina Vittery France in the West Derby district of Liverpool in June 1881. She made her first stage appearances in the early 1900s as part of the company of Charles Whitlock (b. 1859 in Bilston, Staffordshire) and John B. Tully. France and Whitlock would marry in Stockport during the spring of 1903 with the couple's first child, Palmsum Day, being born the following year; Conrade France in 1907; and a daughter Celia in 1911. Charles Whitlock would pen stage work such as 'The Sporting King' (1907) in which both Charles and Georgina would have roles. During 1908 Georgina was the face of Dr William's Pink Pills, a popular medicine of the era with rather dubious benefits. Even so many newspapers carried extensive interviews with Georgina where she would endorse the product. Georgina and Charles would co-author several productions such as 'The Old Wife and the New' staged in the Spring of 1914 by Mr & Mrs Thomas Green and directed by Charles Whitlock. In early May 1915 another of their collaborations 'The King's Secret' was produced at the Playhouse, Stafford. 'The War Baby' was first performed on July 5, 1915 at the Pavilion, Treorchy and later that month at the Theatre Royal, South Shields and Her Majesty's Theatre Walsall with Georgina and Charles once again taking principled roles. In late 1915 the couple would appear at Dublin's Queens Theatre with a production of 'The Motherheart' before continuing to tour 'The War Baby'. After the war both performers seem to fade from the scene. Charles seems to have passed away between 1921 and 1925 with Georgina living at various addresses in Forest of Dean from 1926 onwards. Georgina died in Bromsgrove during June 1940.
