The Love Child
Examiner of Plays' Summary:
[...] Softening of the heart of a rich mine-owner, who has threatened to close down his pit rather than grant the legitimate demands of his workpeople. The strike-leader suddenly reveals himself as the son of the employer and his dead wife, born before their marriage, and left to shift for himself with foster-parents. [...] The mine-owner relents and grants increase of wages demanded. Crude but inoffensive and recommended for license. Ernest A. Bendall
Researcher's Summary:
“The Love Child” was performed from 1915, before the license by the Lord Chamberlain was granted. The sketch was part of the repertory of Mr Wilson’s Company well into the 1920s and mostly performed at small town theatres and cinemas. In the 'Stage' on 3 January 1918, Mr Wilson said they had performed it for 50 weeks in 1917. Unfortunately, evidence for alll of these performances is hard to find.
