Horace Hunter was an actor and writer. He was born William Hunter-Smith on 9 February 1871 in Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire. Together with his wife, Lily Hunter (nee Hammersley) he performed in shows from around 1897 at the Brixton Theatre. He is probably best known for 'Under Suspicion' which he wrote and appeared in many times with Lily. It was made into a film in 1919, scripted by Hunter and Kenelm Foss. The play's sequel 'The Years Between', also by Hunter, was equally popular. Plays include: 'Under Suspicion', 1910; 'The Coward' 1914; 'Naturalised', 1915; 'Next, Please', 1915; 'The Years Between', 1917; 'Reprisals', 1917; 'The Red Hand', 1921; 'The Unexpected', 1922; 'The Wife and the Woman', 1929; and 'The Gun-Woman', 1933. Horace and Lily lived in various addresses: in 1912 in Brunswick Sq, St Pancras; in 1918-20 165 Westbourne Grove, London; in 1932 in a basement flat, 30 Stanhope Gardens, Brompton; in 1935-7 at 10/14 Warwick Road Earls Court; in 1938 at 19 Beaumont Chambers, W14; and from 1939 at 65 Elsham Road, W14. They are recorded as living at that address right through to 1957. In 1958 Lily alone appears at that address. Horace Hunter died, aged 86 in early 1957.
