Clifford Rean
Charles Walter Clifford Rean was baptised on 22 February 1878 in Calstock, Cornwall. His father William Henry Rean was a general practitioner. On 27 July 1899 he married Violet Alice May Pring at St Simon’s, Hammersmith, London; he is shown as an actor. On the 1901 census he is described as a theatrical manager. In July 1906 he was declared bankrupt while he was an actor at the Theatre Royal, Wexford, Ireland. Although he inherited £868 from his grandfather in 1899, he had invested money in a succession of theatrical failures, including his first plays ‘A Son of Satan’ (1902) and ‘A Tempter of Women’ (1904). Twelve years later the 1911 census lists him as an actor and dramatist. Rean was a prolific author of popular melodramas, writing over 30 plays between 1902 and 1927. He also adapted novels for the stage, for example ‘Westward Ho’ (1913) and ‘The Last days of Pompeii’ (1914). The Stage, 4 February 1937, contained a notice of Rean’s death: ‘On January 17, 1937, at his home, 108, Crystal Palace Park Road, S.E.26, Clifford Rean, actor-producer’. His wife, Violet, died in 1962.
