Shakespeare For Merrie England
Examiner of Plays' Summary:
A German professor, proposing to decorate a bust of Shakespeare with a wreath inscribed 'to the divine Teuton Wilhelm the third', falls asleep and has a dream, wherein he is confronted by various Shakespearean heroines, all indignant at his claim of national kinship with the bard. Beatrice chaffs him, Lady Macbeth threatens him, Rosalind banters him in rhyme, Portia argues with him and Titania winds up by placing on his shoulders an ass's head. The satire, if rather elementary, is telling in a perfectly innocuous way. Recommended for license. Ernest A. Bendall
