Great War Theatre

Examiner of Plays' Summary:

This is rollicking musical farce, with a plot depending upon the supposed inheritance by the vulgar shop walker at Messrs Slips & Camisole's of a fortune. The announcement of this windfall comes to him when he is bullying the shop girls after being bullied by the proprietor, and when he is in trouble over the escapade of an eccentric street 'bookie' who, escaping from the police, takes the place of one of the dummy models showing off the costumes. At the end of the first scene the nouveau riche invites everybody present - including the rightful heir and his sweetheart - to a villa at Naples, where they all duly arrive, after many troubles at Victoria station with the lady taxi-drivers, lady-policemen etc. of the period. In the last scene comes the discovery of the mistake as to the hero's legacy after he has betrothed his daughter to a bogus Italian nobleman impersonated by the 'bookie' of the opening episode. There is no offence in any of the nonsense; but the songs, if new, to be introduced, must be forwarded for approval. Recommended for license, Ernest A. Bendall. Songs forwarded and passed.
