Great War Theatre

Examiner of Plays' Summary:

An old-fashioned and simple-minded comic opera. In act I Angelique, wishing to find a substitute for her cousin's betrothed who is chosen as a conscript - it is France in the days of the First Napoleon and there is no bearing on contemporary events - hands up her cross and promises to marry whoever takes it and goes to the war when he comes back. The cross is taken. In act II she is in love with a Captain, who loves her, but will not marry him because of her promise, and when he says that he is the man who took the cross she thinks he is pretending. But the old sergeant who enlisted him turns up and proves his identity. A comic mayor and his termagant wife, a malicious old clerk, and so forth, complete the cast. An unpretentious and quite pretty little thing in its way. Recommended for license G. S. Street
