Great War Theatre

Examiner of Plays' Summary:

A farce with songs - it does not miss-call itself a 'revue' but is similar to the general run of productions which are so called. It has a sort of plot - a man refusing to allow his daughter to marry the hero and promising her to an imbecile rich lad, of another girl dressing up as a boy and pretending to elope with her and everything coming right for no particular reason. There is also a comic old woman of whom the usual stupid fun is made. The whole affair, however, centres round the comedian who appears a as porter, a custom-house officer, a sham German submarine captain and a waiter, and makes the customary low comedy jokes. So far as the script goes there is no harm in it, though I notice the stupid callousness which makes fun of shops being sunk by submarines: this is only pretence, however, and only occupies a page or so. The thing is very sketchy and I should not be surprised to hear that it was elaborated into something more or less objectionable. But one can only deal with a play as it stands. Some of the songs are not given and must be sent in for approval if new. Recommended for license. G. S. Street.
