Great War Theatre

Examiner of Plays' Summary:

This production is sent in a very slovenly condition and I am not sure how much of it is intended to be played, as there are pencil excisions, but I have read the whole: possibly new scenes will come in later. It is harmless rubbish of an inferior musical-comedy type. In the first part various idiots disport themselves at Monte Carlo; a lord changes clothes with his valet, apparently in livery; an imbecile Major wanders about and there are American young women with slang. Then we go to Tokio [Tokyo] and the usual Geisha business happens, with incidents of a man hiding in an ornament and being mistaken for a looking glass. It all ends with as little reason as it began. In part I, page 13 there is a 'burlesque on army rules and regulations and skit on army drills'. The performers are supposed to belong to the Prince of Monaco’s army, but all the same it may be offensive at this time and should be cut out. Certain songs mentioned are not given - e.g. 'a suffragette song' and an 'anti-suffragette song' - and these, if unpublished, must be sent. Recommended for license. G. S. Street. Handwritten. The songs have come and are all published except one which is harmless'
