Great War Theatre

Examiner of Plays' Summary:

This is a striking little study of the struggle which goes on in a poor Jewish household in Russia, before the father can persuade his only surviving son that it is his duty to sacrifice everything including his university career, in order to join the army and fight for the land in which he has been born. The son's resentment at the bygone ill-treatment of his race is gradually overcome by the father's nobly-philosophic argument in favour of belief in Russia’s promise of future freedom for the Jews, especially now that she is the ally of England in a struggle for the freedom of the world. There is nothing in the play to cause offence to either nationality; and it is accordingly - Recommended for license. Ernest A. Bendall.
