Examiner of Plays' Summary:

This is an old fashioned comic opera of a very simple sort. The period is the reign of Queen Anne. The hero, Ralph, loses his fortune, is jilted by the designing Barbara and enlists. He also falls in love with Kitty, a ballad-singer. In Flanders his life is saved by Kitty, who has joined the regiment in male attire. News comes that he has come into another fortune; his discharge has been purchased and the document is secured by Barbara, who produces it just as he is arrested for leaving his post to meet Kitty. He takes possession of his estate and is going to marry Barbara from gratitude when she jilts him again, having heard that a more rightful heir has been found and of course the heir turns out to be Kitty. Mingled with this silly story are the antics of a comic soldier and the folly of his Colonel - this can hardly reflect on the sanctity of the uniform, as the time is Queen Anne's - and the absurdities of an old woman and so on. It is all rather silly, but some of the lyrics are not bad. Recommended for Licence. G. S. Street
