Great War Theatre

Examiner of Plays' Summary:

This is a poignant little war-drama of the days of 1914 in Belgian Flanders. It is realistic yet reasonable in its sketch of the horrors of the German occupation. The burgomaster's daughter is married to the Hun Lieutenant who, with the major, is sent to take possession of her father's house, and finds himself in an agonizing position when the gentle old man is condemned to be shot because one of the German officers has been murdered - probably by one of his own taking vengeance upon a brutal bully. The burgomaster is to be killed because he will not provide a bogus criminal to be executed for what has undoubtedly been a crime: and the discussion of the situation between father and daughter and son-in-law is in the best though least typical style of the famous author. Specially to be praised is the manner in which murderers as well as murdered are shown to be victims of a hideous system of militarism: and the play thus performs fine through sad propaganda work. Recommended for licence. Ernest A. Bendall.
