Great War Theatre

Examiner of Plays' Summary:

A typical war melodrama, the plot and treatment of which have now become conventional, alike in incident and characterisation. To share the trained serious interest there are the two brothers, Captain Jack and Private Joe, the former of whom has married Mary the latter's sweetheart, and has been 'reported missing'. Before the year of mourning is out Mary has married her old love, Joe in all good faith, and has had a child by him; and then of course Captain Jack returns. For a time he is hood-winked by the self-sacrificing subterfuge of a humble friend of Mary's who claims the baby as hers; but when the truth at length comes out the first husband generously makes way for the second, in whose interest she offers to divorce his innocently bigamist wife. The crude sentiment of this more or less realistic romance is relieved by the equally crude humour of trench life a la 'Old Bill' as enjoyed by the brave but comic soldiers beloved by the pit and gallery of to-day. Difficult to take seriously; but impossible to object to on the grounds of raw improbability. Recommended for Licence. Ernest A. Bendall.
