Great War Theatre

Examiner of Plays' Summary:

This illiterate piece, apparently written by a servant for servants, is defined as a 'mirthful mystical musical comedy;. As a matter of fact it is a long string of nonsense or 'spoof' talk about nothing at all, between comedians who pose as lovers, now as ghosts, now as villains now as cheap-jacks and now as policemen - with verbal reminiscences of familiar Plays ranging from 'Hamlet' to 'East Lynne'. Story it has none to tell: but it sets forth in a series of disconnected episodes wholly detached and all treated in 'cod' fashion. It is sheer boisterous meaningless nonsense, and would be as tiresome to see as it is bewildering to read. But it contains no suggestion of offence, and it is accordingly Recommended for Licence. Ernest A. Bendall.
