Great War Theatre

Examiner of Plays' Summary:

This is a vigorous little war-sketch of the misery suffered by the Belgians at the hands of the German masters, some of whom pretend, for the purposes of espionage, to be Belgians themselves. One of these, a horrible old hag who occupies a farm a few miles behind the Hun lines and is in the pay of a German General, is defied in her brutal treatment of a Belgian child by an unhappy woman from Louvain, who also undertakes the dangerous task of concealing in the farm-house a British airman and a Tommy, who has come to grief hard by. The arrival of the general on the scene leads to much cruelty on the part of his minion and too much risk for the fugitives. But the desperate ‘woman from Louvain’ proves equal by her courage and resource to all emergencies. The general and his spy are killed; the airman escapes on a canal-boat bound for Holland, and insists upon taking with him his brave rescuer, whose memories of her past shame render her reluctant to save her own wretched life. Vigorous and painful; but sound and wholesome, even in its horror. Recommended for license. Ernest A. Bendall

Reviews: "This is one of the most thrilling one-act plays it has been our lot to witness, for Mr John G Brandon has written a play that grips throughout." | "Miss Mary Mayfren ... achieved quite a personal triumph. At times with delightful reserve, and at others with flaming scourn, her performance was highly meritorious." | "an ovation for all concerned at the close".

Performed by: Mary Mayfren and company Reviews: "John G Brandon ... would appear to have a special aptitude for writing dramatic sketches with a bite in them. The sketch under notice, although scarcely in the same dramatic category as 'The Frenchwoman' is, nevertheless, quite qualified to rank as a companion picture to that interesting war piece, so successfully exploited on the variety stage by Mary Mayfren."
