Great War Theatre

Examiner of Plays' Summary:

A war-widow who has re-married two years after hearing of her first husband’s death in action, is expecting home from the front her second husband on short leave. In his stead there appears his predecessor, who it seems has been a prisoner in Germany, when for a time he lost his memory, and whence he has just escaped. The woman has loved him, and she now loves his successor, by whom however she has a child; whereas the first marriage was childless. So to prevent the illegitimacy of this child from being known, she persuades her first husband to disappear before her second arrives: and with his self-sacrifice the strenuous but unconvincing tragedietta sadly ends, with the ‘stronger pull’ of maternity. Recommended for license, Ernest A. Bendall. A page of additional written for this play, which was licensed in 1917, has come in. I can see no harm at all in it. G. S. Street, dated 20 April 1920.
