Great War Theatre

Examiner of Plays' Summary:

This is a pantomime greatly altered since its production at Portsmouth in 1915. It still tells the story of the "Babes", whom it associates not with Robin Hood, as is now usual, but with the Miller of the Dee; but the tale, which has its scenes laid partly in Titania's fairyland and partly "on the Dee" is to a great extent new in action, dialogue and ditty. It is moreover brought up to date by the introduction of an episode called "At the Front" which, quite irrelevantly, illustrates the cheery humour of Tommies in the trenches over their amateur hair-cutting experiments, and their sing songs, during the interludes between alarums and excursions. New and old the piece is quite innocuous [...] Ernest A. Bendall
