Great War Theatre

Examiner of Plays' Summary:

Rather a good Pantomime, with a fairly original use of nursery rhyme personages and hardly any vulgarity. The Wicked Squire wants Red Riding Hood removed, and so bribes the Wolf. He also wants to marry Miss Muffet, who loves Boy Blue, and Old Mother Hubbard loves him. The classic scene of the wolf dressed up as Red Riding Hood’s Granny is enacted, and scope is found for the spider. I have marked Act 1 p.22, a joke about “What is Mr Asquith? – Mrs Asquith’s husband” but I don’t think any harm is intended. An “Egg-erie” speciality mentioned (act II p.14) might be sent in also the songs. Recommended for licence G. S. Street P.s. “Egg-erie” speciality. This speciality act, which has been touring the Music Halls for five years, is purely electrical, and there is not a word spoken. It is merely a mechanical device which appears to lay eggs, and it is just the same as including an acrobatic or juggling act into a Pantomime.
