Examiner of Plays' Summary:

This is not a very distinguished but is not at all a bad comic opera, as far as the dialogue and lyrics go, and has plenty of movement. The story is simple. Act I is in a bandit's cave. The chief bandit, Baldassarre, is the hero, a magnanimous fellow. Teresa is in love with him, but he loves Angela, the Governor's daughter. Teresa is captured, and in act II Baldassarre and his men turn up in the character of the Governor and his servant, to rescue her but Teresa, maddened by jealousy, betrays them. In act III they are imprisoned on an island. Angela induces a Lieutenant to set Baldassarre free for the price of her hand and Baldassarre and Teresa are reconciled. Various comic characters make up the piece. I have marked a dubious line in act I, p12 "When I wasn't being faithful to you I'd be working for you", but the suggestion is very vague and I think need not be noticed in an innocent piece. Page 35 of act II is missing and might be asked for as a matter of principle, but it is hardly worthwhile. The songs are all here. Recommended for Licence G. S. Street
