Forty Winks
Examiner of Plays' Summary:
A musical burlesque with very little story and many songs. Such plot as there is depends upon a blunder as to the identities of Gertie a munition worker, and Gertie a coster woman. To the latter a solicitor announces her inheritance from an unknown uncle of £100,000, on condition that she goes to Morocco to claim it. This she does, and is accompanied, for no particular reason, by most of the other dramatis personae who include a couple of wealthy American tourists, a couple of revue comedians, and the other Gertie. After various irrelevant doings in a store, and on board ship, it is discovered that the rightful legatee is the other, Gertie, the munition-worker, to the great delight of her fiancé, Billy Buster, a coster. There is no offence in any of the aimless stuff; but some particulars of scene V which is merely described as ‘speciality’, should be forwarded together with the words of the song - if new - to be given at the beginning of scene VI. Recommend for license, Ernest A. Bendall. Songs etc. forwarded and approved. 29/9/1916. The speciality referred to is a sketch by a little boy of the pantomime which he saw overnight. He describes, and impersonates in turn, all the dramatis personae. Recommended for license. Ernest A. Bendall.
