Examiner of Plays' Summary:

"Sonnie" is the illegitimate baby of an artisan's daughter, living in Glasgow with her parents, who are under the impression that the child's father is the girl's former sweetheart, a worthy young fellow, who suddenly emigrated some months ago to Canada. On the young man's unexpected return the family assumes that it is his intention to marry his child's mother; but as soon as the pair are left together it is made clear that the father was another man, who was killed by an accident on the Clyde, before he had time to fulfil his promise of marriage, and so legitimize his coming offspring. The point of the playlet, which deals with its painful subject with admirable reticence, lies in the generosity of the jilted lover, who leaves the family ignorant of the real state of affairs, takes up the dead man's burden for his old sweetheart's sake, and by marrying her assumes responsibility for a fault not his own.
