Great War Theatre

Examiner of Plays' Summary:

This re-written and much extended version of "Dark Town Jingles". Makes of the latter, which is practically a nigger entertainment of song and dance and chatter, the central episode is a farce. A squire's daughter who wants to get married to a young actor - much against the will of her scheming aunt and her aunt's fiance - persuades her father to let her go upon the stage. After her debut with her lover at the Duke of Connaught's theatre in London - where the plotting uncle vainly tries to upset the lover's singing - the whole party sails for South America, where after sampling Plantation ditties, the heroine and her father engage all the dusky vocalists for London. The primitive fun is all harmless, with the exception of three coarse sham advertisements, as marked in Act V, which should be deleted. Ernest A. Bendall.
