Read Narrative
‘An additional income of £600 a year is needed by the Royal School for Naval and Marine Officers’ Daughters, St. Margaret’s House, Twickenham. The school accepts a large proportion of pupils at comparatively remunerative fees to the exclusion of necessitous cases, which the school exists to aid. Thus its proper function is restricted, and, as the ratio of remuneration to necessitous cases diminishes owing to the war, it must be further restricted unless timely help is forthcoming. As a means of obtaining this help, a matinée will be given to-morrow at the Royal Court Theatre at three o’clock, Mr. Henry Ainley, Esmé Beringer, Miss Vera Beringer, Miss Lilian Braithwaite, Miss Margaret Cooper, Mme. Delysia, and Mr. Albert Whelan have promised their services, and a one-act fantasy, with a children’s ballet, will be produced under the title of “Fleur de Lys,” by Miss Vera Beringer. Miss Betty Balfour, Miss Ione Rideal, Miss Mercia Cameron, Miss Jane Forestier, Miss Phyllis Campbell, Miss Magdalen Curzon, Miss Evelyn Loring, Miss Iris Loring, and Miss Mer Skinner will take part. Tickets may be obtained at the box-office of the theatre’ (Westminster Gazette, 20 July 1916). ‘The matinee was quite a success. There was a Fairy Fantasy, in which remarkably clever acting and singing was done by children and young girls, among them Miss Valerie Wyngate, a niece or daughter of the Sirdar, and Miss Magdalen Curzon’ (Belfast News-Letter, 24 July 1916).
