Great War Theatre

Examiner of Plays' Summary:

There is a simply plot in this revue, but nothing to explain the title. Sir Arthur Tipton, a wealthy tradesman, announces that he wants to find a woman who will love him for himself alone and proposes to go round the world in his electro 'bus' to find one. His nephew Dick, being his heir, wishes to defeat this plan, and persuades his young woman, Betty Carruthers, to dress up in the different places and disgust Sir Albert by first accepting him and then jilting him. There is also one Emma, of lowly degree, who really loves Sir A. and a comic servant, Harris. After scenes in the electric 'bus', in Japan, where Betty and Emma both pose as Geishas, and in Egypt the party comes back. Sir A. promises Emma to marry her if his horse wins the Melbourne Cup, which duly happens after he has consented to Dick and Betty marrying. There is occasional suggestiveness in the dialogue, but it is quite vague and would only appeal as such to persons determined to find suggestiveness. I have marked on p.15 a joke - 'have you had your ticket punched? 'Only one' - as rather less vague than most, but I hardly think one is compelled to see a 'meaning' in this sort of thing. The name Sir Albert Tipton of course suggests Sir Thomas Lipton and possibly a make up like him should be forbidden. Songs not sent in and new must be sent. Recommended for Licence. G. S. Street. June 30th. Other songs said to be published, but two topical songs not yet written: they of course must be sent in when they are. July 3rd. The 5th verse of 'Stop your nonsense' is suggestive, but I think need not be cut. The rest and the other song are merely silly.
