Examiner of Plays' Summary:

An average witless melodrama. The heroine was brought up by humble folk, her parentage unknown to her and them, but the villain knew that the half of a locket she wore showed she was his rich uncle's lost heiress. So he schemed to get away from the hero, assisted by the villainess who wanted the latter for himself, and the two, by various childish tricks and lies, and in spite of the opposition of the comic characters, succeed up to a point until the opportune return of the hero, supposed dead at the front, upsets their plans. The villain then kills the villainess, and he is arrested: both incidentally are spies in the pay of the Germans. Half way through the play, it appears that the heroine is going to have a child, though not yet married to the hero. It is regrettable that this sort of thing is on the increase in those melodramas, and in this case it is treated rather too lightly for orthodox morality eg "love sanctifies and purifies passion" etc Act 11 p.14. But I do not think it calls for interference - not being in the least indecent [...]
