A sort of milestone of humble life, elaborating Mr Chevalier's cockney songs. The section which extends over 40 years begins in 1870, with Joe's courtship of Sal. They marry and Sal comes into money, with which they foolishly have the "Nipper" brought up as a gentleman, with the result that he squanders the money and has to migrate. The couple then fall on evil times and by 1912 are brought to the workhouse.
