Great War Theatre

Examiner of Plays' Summary:

The usual rubbish, but without anything unpleasantly suggestive in the dialogue. In the first scene the heroine changes places with the housemaid for no particular reason with resulting confusion. The second is in Piccadilly Circus and consists chiefly of a dialogue between a soldier on leave and a ‘dude’, in which the soldier relates an imaginary trench incident and the ‘dude’ keeps on misunderstanding the points: this sort of thing jars on one’s taste but can hardly be prevented. Then, in a solicitor’s office, there is a police court burlesque scene and a familiar scene of misunderstanding about puppies - not offensive. This is followed by a ‘parade of Dickens characters’, and finally by a scene on a pier in which the heroine’s father takes off his trousers, inside a kiosk, having split a seam in them, and eventually emerging in a ‘newspaper suit’ (the last page) has to consent to her marriage to get them back. This last incident is not necessarily offensive, and I think only something silly fun is meant, but a caution about it might be as well. Various songs mentioned are not given and must be sent in if new. Recommended for license. G. S. Street. The songs have now come in and are harmless. GSS.
