Examiner of Plays' Summary:

This is a compilation for stage purposes of passages from various old Miracle Plays dealing with the Nativity. It begins with the appearance of the Angel Gabriel to the Shepherds, whose attention is directed by him to the Stars over Bethlehem, and whose bucolic humours are illustrated in their talk with a sheep-thief, who, while they sleep commits his theft, and with his wife conceals the plunder in a cradle. The Shepherds start for Bethlehem: The Kings or Magi, after passages with Herod, follow: they all arrive at the stable where they take part in the Adoration of the Virgin Mary and the Child. Both of these latter are introduced; and this in the circumstances may perhaps be permitted. But, in accordance with precedents, the lines allotted to Mary, p.67 and p.70 should be omitted. Under these conditions, and for studiously reverent representation the religious mystery is Recommended for Licence. Ernest H. Bendall.
