Great War Theatre

Examiner of Plays' Summary:

This is a sentimental melodrama, with many confused issues loosely connected by sentimental songs and social politics of to-day. Its main story is that of a strike at a Welsh Foundry, engineered by a German spy. The secondary plot finds its motive in the vengeful desire of the Foundry proprietor's illegitimate son to ruin him, as a punishment for his ill-treatment of the betrayed woman who died after being deserted. Other threads in the complicated and ignorantly -made fabric are provided by the villainy of the Foundry proprietor's legitimate son, who has seduced the daughter of the local Innkeeper and (in order to avoid discovery by the heroine whom it is imperative that he should marry in order to save the business from ruin) gets his victim lured away to a disreputable night-club in London, where he tries to attribute her disgrace to his unknown half-brother. The scenes at this night-club are even more crude than those at the Foundry; but the curious mixture is quite innocuous, as are also the ditties which are to accompany and illustrate its presentation.
