Great War Theatre

'Mr. Harold Owen, journalist and author, died at his home in Park Avenue, Broadstairs, on Saturday night. Mr. Owen, who was aged 58, was part author of "Mr. Wu," in which, however, Mr. H. M. Vernon asserted a claim to the major share. "Mr. Wu," a Chinese melodrama, was produced with popular success at the Strand on November 27, 1913, and was subsequently revived, and was also played on tour. Mr. Owen's play "Loyalty," a satire on pacifism, was produced on November 21, 1917, at the St. James's, where it ran for twenty performances. His other plays included "Such is Life" (1917), "The Man Who Missed the War" (1918), "Fatherhood" (1925), "A Man Unknown" (1926), and "The Man Who Missed It," a war farce, the failure of which - it ran for only five performances at the Strand last November - roused the author to an attack in our columns on dramatic criticism. The funeral took place yesterday (Wednesday), at St. Peter's Church, Broadstairs'. The Stage, 15 May 1930.
