‘The death of Mr. Charles H. Longden, for many years co-lessee with Mr. Ernest Dottridge of the Theatre Royal, Leamington, occurred last week at Bradford, at the age of 63. Mr. Longden took over the management of the Theatre Royal in September … Mr. Longden had been associated with the stage for many years, during 17 of which he had been in partnership with Mr. Ernest Dottridge previous to their lesseeship of the Leamington Theatre. Together they ran several theatres in the country and many touring companies. In conjunction with the late Mr. Mouillot, Mr. Longden built the Queen’s Theatre, Leeds. To some extent he was also a writer of plays, his melodrama, “The Midnight Mail,” being especially popular, he himself playing a leading part. Mr. Longden was acting up till within a short time of his death … He leaves a widow and one daughter. Miss Longden is a young actress of considerable ability … Mr. Longden was buried at Oldham’ (Leamington Spa Courier, 23 August 1918). Ancestry.co.uk shows that Charles Henderson Longden died on 11 August 1918 and was buried at Chadderton Cemetery, Oldham. The Hull Daily Mail,16 August 1918, also published an obituary.
