Great War Theatre

The author ‘Andrew Emm’ was Andrew Melville, the younger brother of playwrights Walter and Frederick Melville - sons and grandsons of actors and theatre managers - who adopted their father’s stage name. His obituary was published in The Stage, 10 March 1938: ‘Andrew Emm Melville. We regret to record the death of Andrew Melville at Portslade, Brighton, on March 4. The youngest son of Andrew Melville (Robinson), he was one of three brothers whose family have been connected with the English stage for 178 years. His death follows swiftly upon that of his brother Walter, a year ago, who with the third brother, Frederick, was conspicuous in the long and successful management of the Lyceum. Unlike his brothers, Andrew worked alone. He owned the Grand, Brighton, where he had been prominent for the last twenty years. Besides acting in melodrama, he was also a manager, producer and dramatist. He leaves a widow, a daughter, and three sons, one of whom, under the name of Jack Emm, is the present stage-manager at the Lyceum. The funeral took place at Hove Cemetery on Tuesday after a service at 12.30 at St. Nicholas Church, Portslade’.
