Great War Theatre

Frank Hubert Shaw was born in 1878. He was a well-known author when the First World War broke out. The 'Encyclopedia of Science Fiction' notes that he wrote under a variety of names including Frank Cleveland, Archibald Guthrie, Grenville Hammerton, Frank Hubert, Ernest Winchfield and others. Shaw served as a captain in the navy during the war and in 1916 released a volume of stories entitled 'Atlantic Nights' which were 'based on his own experiences of mercantile marine life, as Shaw was a captain of a famous commercial liner before he went out to Flanders recently as Flight-Commander Shaw’ (Westminster Gazette, 5 May 1916).
