Great War Theatre

Jean-François Eléonore Fonson, otherwise known as Frantz Fonson, was a Belgian playwright and theatre manager. He was born in Brussels on 22 January 1870 and died in Paris on 16 December 1924. Some biographical details and lists of the theatre plays and film screenplays that he wrote are on Wikipedia. The Era, 12 July 1916, reported that he ‘was manager of the Galeries Théàtre in Brussels. Then the war came, and the Boches made him prisoner. But Fonson, though a Belgian, took French leave of the Huns, and escaped into Holland, and from there to Paris’. His death was reported briefly in several English provincial newspapers (Lincolnshire Echo, Shields Daily News, Gloucester Citizen, Gloucestershire Echo, Lancashire Evening Post, all 18 December 1924; Western Times, 19 December 1924).
