Great War Theatre

It is with great regret that we record that Marriott Edgar died this week, aged 70. Perhaps best known to the general public for his dame impersonations and for his monologue "Albert and the Lion," first performed by Stanley Holloway. Marriott Edgar spent a lifetime in the profession. Born in Scotland he went to school in London and made his stage debut at the Grand, Islington, in 1897, walking on with Sir George Alexander in "As You Like It." Like Edgar Wallace he was a grandson of Alice Marriott the actress and manageress. His first important variety performance was at Collins in 1904. Afterwards he appeared at practically every leading hall throughout the country in revue, variety and pantomime. He toured Australia,, New Zealand and South Africa, and appeared in New York for the first time in 1910. One of the most celebrated of dames, Mr. Edgar wrote most of his own material as well as "books" and lyrics for many productions. (The Stage - Thursday 17 May 1951)
